Leslie Nord's Random Thoughts on Friends, Family and Life

I never was much of a writer - more like a rambler that easily gets lost in a tangent. My blog lets me go out on those tangents any time I want to. So remember, life is like a roller coaster: sit down and hang on. Sometimes you'll want to scream, sometimes you'll puke, but give it a chance and you'll find it can be a lot of fun.

Stress "Test"

October 5, 2005 by leslie Leave a Comment

Considering I have Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, I decided to ignore the chest pains an attribute them to stress. I told myself if the trip to San Diego didn’t calm them down, I’d go see my doctor. I made an appointment as soon as I got back, but it took three weeks to get in to see her (vacation time). So I went in with a laundry list of issues. Brought her up to speed on what the Neurologist told me about the headaches (LOL – it’s all in my head).

Showed her the joint on my middle finger and mentioned my dad’s joints in his fingers deteriorated I thought I needed to get it x-rayed. Yes, it’s my bowling hand. Then I asked to go ahead and schedule the bone density test and mammogram.

Finally, I hit her with the biggie – I told her I probably show have an EKG to try and figure out the chest pains. She gets the EKG results and says “it looks okay, but…” So I get scheduled for a Thallium stress test. Been there done that so, I knew what to expect. So when the technician went to insert the IV, I warned her I was a “difficult stick”. After about ten minutes of trying to chase after a “rolling vein” on the back on my hand, I was nauseated and started graying out. Finally she gave up and said she was going to get someone else. They get me stretched out and feet elevated. The new tech grabs my arm and rams the needle into my arm, rather proud of herself that she got it in on the first try. Then she tells me she’s going to get a cool rag for my head and that I could stay put in the reclined chair. The rest of the test went as expected. The IV was hurting and I did ask them to check to see if it blew the vein. The radioactive dye was injected and off I went. The whole treadmill part only lasted 6 minutes. It’s now around 2PM (I’d been there since 10AM) and I finally get my first drink (of water) since 5AM. The IV comes out and the tech is applying what I thought was the right amount of pressure to the “wound”. I get a 30 minute break before the next scan and I’m told I can get something to eat. I have no appetite and feel pretty nauseated. I opt for plain saltine crackers. I come back for the last scan, get it done and am told I can go. Thank goodness, by this time the nausea is worse and I have an awful metallic taste in my mouth. I told Jeff I thought a milk shake might be good but we passed by a Starbucks in the hospital. He knew how much I like the Frappachino’s but I didn’t want any caffeine so I opted for the green tea Frappachino – that seemed to sooth my stomach. We headed back to my car and I drove Jeff over to his car. My arm seemed to be extremely tender at the IV site so I pulled the bandage back to look and as expected a bruise was starting to form. By the time I got home, the bruise was a football shape 4 inches long and almost 2 inches wide and very tender. I spent the weekend feel awful – didn’t even coach the little kids.

I got the results back from the bone density scan – Osteopenia – so I up the calcium. The mammogram was fine. The x-ray to my finger told me what I already knew – the joint is deteriorating – guess I could learn to bowl left handed. Nothing back on the stress test – no news is good news. Just too stressed out 🙂

Another month gone.

This month went by too fast. At least I got to share part of it with Megan. She had gotten sick and run down after getting a sinus infection, so Dr. Mom stepped in and said it would be best if she came and stayed with us. What had happened was she wasn’t eating properly due to a combination of the medications she was taking and she got tired, dizzy and very weak.

Her stay this time was by far the best one we have had with her. She was a huge help taking care of the house and did a great job while I was in San Diego for a conference. She and Jeff got along so well – I don’t think they can een begin to realize how much that means to me.

I did a photo “documentary” of the Miva Conference in San Diego – just a lot of people shots – even got mentioned (again) on the Miva website:

Conference Photos

I really enjoyed San Deigo – although I didn’t see much of it. It’s a place I would love to live at – if I could afford it.

As for the server move – it’s taken over six weeks to get everything moved and reconfigured. I’m feeling like the move was more a hostile takeover more than anything else.

Yet another server move

The move to this new server was supposed to cut down my time as a server admin, yeah right.

So this is a just a test post to make sure it publishes correctly. Then I have to fix the phto gallery RSS feed.

You know when…

July 27, 2005 by leslie Leave a Comment

You know when you are falling behind when you get an email from your
daughter telling you that you have not updated your website. Megan
sent me an email asking me if I knew I hadn’t updated my site since
the end of June. I think she forgot all that was going on during that
time. I had just gotten back from the UT Alumni Leadership Conference
in Knoxville (where we were surrounded by Honda motorcycles at the
Honda Hoot). Then I started getting ready for the weekend back in TN.
I took a half day off on Friday the 1st just to get packed – since I
decided I was going to take our smoker grill with us to cook ribs.

We stayed with Jeff best friend Chris and his family. It was an
“interesting” weekend to say the least. They’ve done a complete 180
degree turn around since joining a small local church. Jeff has been
having on going discussions with Chris about the Catholic Church – at
least he doesn’t think the pope is the anti-Christ anymore. We left
with the feeling that the preacher of this little church is sucking
them dry financially.

Then Tuesday – July 5th (my mom’s birthday) I picked up Megan so she
could spend two weeks with us. Since I didn’t get to spend any time
with her the last time she came down (right when the Pope died), I
promised her I would take the week off with her. We had scheduled to
get pictures taken at Sears on the 8th. So we went all over the place
finding shoes and clothes for the pictures. We also had talks about
finishing high school and thinking about college. She had talked about
wanting to move back to Alabama because her friend Jason lives here. I
had to remind her that he is planning on going away to college so
wanting to move somewhere just because one person was here wasn’t
really a good reason. We had talks about initiative and not doing just
the bare minimums and finding things to get involved in outside the
four walls of the apartment her father leaves her at.

We had the pleasure of Hurricane Dennis’ company while she was here –
we got a lot of rain and it rained for days. But all in all we faired
Dennis better than Ivan.

Megan was here when Jeff bought his motorcycle. He tried to talk her
into signing up for the training course. The motorcycle her father
bought her – a Harley 1200 Custom – is just too big for her – heck she
can’t even drive a car yet. Her motorcycle is bigger than Jeff’s. I
personally think it’s the stupidest thing her father ever got her –
maybe if he just spent more time with her instead spending money on
her….

But any who, Jeff is taking his time getting comfortable riding his
motorcycle. I’ve been doing battle with an associate that took it upon
himself to work up a new server deal after I just upgraded the server
I have. And I’m trying to stay out of the line of fire at the day job.

I need to get the latest pictures of the flower garden up and pictures
of Jeff’s motorcycle. I need more hours in the day…

Those of you who were betting that my knees would be the first "metal" replacements, you lost. I now have a bit of titanium in my cervical spine. I wonder if the doc will give me a pic of the post-op x-rays?
